Mr Sheen is a general surgeon with a special interest in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery (HPB).

He is one of three specialist HPB surgeons at Manchester Royal Infirmary and spent his training years as a specialist registrar in Manchester. During this time, he obtained a doctor of medicine (MD) for his research into gene therapy for metastatic liver cancer from Manchester University. This was followed by a year spent on advanced specialist training at the liver and transplantation unit in Leeds.

His main areas of surgical interest include both benign and malignant tumours of the liver and pancreas. The commonest surgery performed by Mr Sheen is laparoscopic cholecystectomy. He also maintains an interest in general surgery such as repair of all types of hernias.

Mr Sheen's research interests remain focused around the role of gene therapy for the treatment of colorectal liver metastases. Much of this work was originally carried out at Christie's Hospital, Manchester, and he was awarded the best scientific oral presentation (Chicago Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons Durand Smith MD award) at the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.

Mr Sheen as part of his hernia interest undertakes suture less hernia surgery for which he has gained a National reputation as well as running an International course in Vienna.

He also in March 2011 was awarded a Visiting Professorship in the United States.

 

Mr Sheen was born and educated in London then faced the winters of Scotland for five years at medical school. His main social interests include squash, cycling and swimming. He also spent some years as a junior doctor at Silverstone motor racing circuit as a medical officer.
