Dr Sarkar was appointed as a  Consultant Gastroenterologist and Endoscopist at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in January 2009 where he is the endoscopy service, research and audit lead. He is also an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool and the Deputy Programme Director for Gastroenterology in Mersey and Cheshire. Prior to this post he was a Consultant Gastroenterologist / Physician at University Hospitals Aintree (UHA) for five years.

His specialist interests include therapeutic endoscopy (ERCP, endoscopic ultra-sound, upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, bowel cancer screening), hepato-biliary-pancreatic disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and functional bowel disorders.

He is a certified endoscopy trainer at the Mersey School of Endoscopy and an accredited advanced colonoscopist for population bowel cancer screening.

Research interests include endoscopic outcomes, quality and safety and functional bowel disorders. Dr Sarkar is also the clinical governance lead in endoscopy at UHA which is one of the busiest units in the UK.

Dr Sarkar was born and educated in Birmingham. He graduated from the University of Manchester with a medical degree (MBchB), a BSc (Hons) and PhD. His specialist training before his consultants post involved working at all of the Manchester teaching hospitals (MRI, Hope and Wythenshaw) and finally at the Royal Liverpool as an advanced endoscopy training fellow.

Dr Sarkar currently resides in Macclesfield with his wife who is a Clinical Services Manager in Medicine at the local hospital, and young son. His hobbies include entertaining his family, wining and dining and sports such as squash, jogging and cycling.
