Subfertility investigations at Spire Cheshire Hospital

A new service is available at Spire Cheshire Hospital as part of investigations for subfertility.

Mrs Asra Saleem, Consultant Gynaecologist is able to offer HyCoSy – Hystero-Contrast-Salpingography. This is an established method of testing using ultrasound to show the uterus and fallopian tubes to see if they are blocked. Around 30% of cases of infertility are due to the fallopian tubes being blocked. Tubal blockage prevents the egg from meeting the sperm, so conception cannot take place.

The procedure involves inserting a speculum – similar to that used for a smear test, into the vagina. A sugar solution is then passed through a fine catheter which shows up on the ultrasound. If the tubes are blocked, the solution will not been seen moving along and spilling out of the tubes.

Most women find this test acceptable and often prefer it to other methods as there is less risk and it is less invasive.
