Osteoporosis screening

Osteoporosis screening available at Spire Cheshire Hospital

Spire Cheshire Hospital offers a service which particularly benefits the over 50's in the area. The mobile DXA scanner measures the bone density of the patient's hip and spine. The scan is quick, painless and involves very small doses of X-rays. Patients may self-refer or be referred by their GP or consultant.

Osteoporosis literally means 'porous bones', and is a loss of bone mass associated with older age. Both men and women can suffer from this disease. Osteoporosis develops gradually over many years with no obvious symptoms until a fracture occurs. The commonest sites for fractures are the wrists, hips and spine often as a result of a minor bump or fall.

A detailed report for each patient is produced and a copy of this will be then sent to the patient's GP or referring clinician, normally within a few days.

The service is open to all and the cost of the test is available on request. In some instances this procedure is covered by private medical insurance.
