Heart failure is the term used when the heart becomes less efficient at pumping blood around the body. It usually occurs because the heart muscle is damaged, making it difficult for the heart to pump effectively. The most common cause of heart failure is a previous heart attack but it can be the result of other conditions that can cause an increase in workload on the heart.
