    Research interests:

    Dr Smith was awarded a research doctorate degree from the University of London for research work in the field of coronary artery disease progression and coronary plaque stability. Dr Smith’s current research interests include blood clot structure and function in acute coronary syndromes collaborating with Prof Adrian Evans’ Haemostasis Biomedical Research Unit at Swansea, and cardiovascular electronic informatics linkage collaborating with the SAIL team at Swansea University. He is an honorary associate professor at the College of Medicine in Swansea University.

    Dr Smith is an interventional cardiologist who has worked in Morriston Hospital, since 2006. He undertook clinical training in Southampton, London, Swansea, Cardiff and Paris. He was also awarded a research doctorate degree from the University of London for research work in the field of coronary artery disease progression and coronary plaque stability. Dr Smith is the associate clinical director for the cardiac unit and the lead clinician for the regional primary angioplasty heart attack service in Mid and South West Wales. He was one of the co-chairs of the Welsh Specialised Cardiac Services Review in 2010 and he was also a member of the UK NICE guideline development group for the recently published national guidance on the acute management of heart attack.  

    As well as managing all forms of coronary disease, Dr Smith performs a wide range of coronary interventions including coronary angiography and angioplasty via the radial artery, intravascular imaging with ultrasound and optical coherence tomography, rotational atherectomy and revascularisation of chronic occluded coronary arteries (CTO). 

    In addition to coronary artery disease management and intervention, Dr Smith also manages patients with heart valve disease and performs structural intervention in the form of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).

  • In his spare time, Dr Smith likes to spend time with his wife and two daughters and enjoys food, wine and travelling. He attempts to keep fit with a combination of cycling, poor quality five-a-side football and cricket. Dr Smith is also a fully qualified ski instructor, having previously been a member of the British Alpine Ski Squad.
