  • improves blood flow
  • improves movement of lymph and oxygen throughout the body
  • helps to restore function to injured “soft tissues” (muscles, tendons and ligaments)
  • removes metabolic waste resulting from exercise and inactivity

Sports massage aids your recovery from injuries and may be used in conjunction with physiotherapy.

What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a deep tissue massage that loosens tight muscles and breaks down adhesions in muscle fibres. It can be part of your training in connection with a warm up or a cool down.

Sports massage can help to:

  • prevent injuries
  • maintain the function of muscles
  • helps your recovery from intense training

Does massage hurt?

No form of massage should hurt. Tender areas of tension or injury sometimes needs to be handled with some degree of pressure which enables the deep tissue work to break up adhesions in the muscle or scar tissue. Communication between therapist and patient is essential.

Specific areas that can be focused on with sports massage:

  • neck and shoulder massage
  • back massage
  • leg massage
  • arm and hand massage
  • full body massage

If you want a specific muscle or area worked on, please discuss with your therapist.

Can I bring someone with me to the session?

Yes, you are very welcome to bring somebody along. However, children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who must remain throughout the treatment.

Do I need to get undressed?

This will depend on the area being treated, just wear comfortable loose clothing; i;e trousers which you can pull up over your knees.
