At Spire Cardiff Hospital, we have wide experience in hip replacement surgery in our clean, modern facilities. Your consultant may recommend:

  • Minimally invasive surgery, which uses smaller incisions than traditional techniques, resulting in faster recovery
  • Anterior hip replacement surgery, when incisions are made in the front of the hip, resulting in less pain and faster recovery than with traditional surgery

Spire Cardiff Hospital is just a short distance from Junction 30 off the M4 and is well signposted. Public transport options are available, while patients and visitors can make use of free on-site car parking.

Your consultations

For your appointments, you’ll meet your consultant in one of our 21 consultation rooms. All of our rooms are accessible, which makes it easier if you find walking difficult prior to hip replacement.

Our dedicated orthopaedic consultants specialise in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (bone and muscle) conditions. Here’s what will happen before your treatment:

  • If you haven’t been diagnosed yet, your consultant may recommend our advanced scanning, imaging and diagnostic technologies to look at your hip and help understand the cause of your pain or mobility problems
  • Once you’ve been diagnosed or if you have a referral, your consultant will then discuss treatment options with you
  • Before recommending a hip replacement, they may suggest hydrocortisone joint injections first

Your consultations give you an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your expectations, needs and desires. Your consultant will then be able to outline a treatment and care plan that’s tailored to you. Both your initial consultation and tests at this stage are charged separately to the cost of any treatment needed.

Hip replacement: your procedure

Here’s what will happen once you arrive at Spire Cardiff Hospital for your hip replacement operation:

  • You’ll meet your surgery team and anaesthetist
  • You'll have either a general anaesthetic, where you’re unconscious, or an epidural or spinal anaesthetic, where you're numb from the waist down
  • If you have an epidural or spinal anaesthetic, your anaesthetist can also give you a sedative to help you relax
  • Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will make one or more incisions in your hip, remove both the socket and the top of your thigh bone and replace them with a new artificial hip joint

The operation should take between an hour and an hour and a half. If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our lounge or restaurant while you have your operation.

Head to our main hip replacement surgery page for step-by-step information about the procedure.
