Jose is a Consultant Physician in General Respiratory and Sleep Medicine based at Nevill Hall Hospital. He is also experienced in allergic disorders.
Respiratory Medicine: Jose has extensive experience in General Respiratory medicine and its subspecialties such as asthma, COPD, interstitial lung diseases, pleural diseases and lung cancer. He has a special interest in unexplained breathlessness and laboratory evaluation of lung function and cardio-pulmonary exercise tests.
Sleep Medicine: Jose has led the sleep and breathing service at Nevill Hall Hospital since 2003, and has taken an active interest in the specialty of Sleep Medicine since 2010. Jose is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, British Sleep Society (BSS) and European Sleep Research Society (ESRS).
Jose is experienced in diagnosis and management of the full range of sleep disorders including sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, parasomnias (such as sleep walking, REM sleep behaviour disorder), circadian rhythm sleep disorders and others. Jose conducts weekly clinics for patients with sleep apnoea, complex sleep disordered breathing and Neurological sleep disorders.
Allergy: Jose has experience in the management of general and respiratory allergic disorders and provides the general allergy service at the ABUHB through fortnightly dedicated allergy clinics at Nevill Hall Hospital. Jose receives referrals for a variety of conditions including urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis, nut and food allergy and insect sting allergy.
Sleep studies: Jose trained in sleep staging at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He holds both the RPSGT (offered by the Board of Registered Polysomnography Technologists) and RST (offered by the American Board of Sleep Medicine) certificates in sleep technology and is experienced in the full range of sleep studies including Polysomnography, Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) and others. He is a member of the BRPT, American Association of Sleep Technologists and European Society of Sleep Technologists.
Jose carries out the full range of sleep studies. Level I (Overnight Pulse Oximetry) and Level II (Limited polysomnography or Cardio-respiratory Polygraphy) can be arranged as needed at the patients’ home. Advanced Level III & IV (Full Polysomnography – PSG; MSLT and MWT, Transcutaneous blood gas monitoring and inpatient Positive Airway Pressure titrations can be arranged at the Aneurin Bevan Sleep Centre. The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has enabled access for privately funded patients for advanced sleep studies at the Aneurin Bevan Sleep Centre.
