Clinical quality through service standards

  • To be part of our Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence, our people have to be enthusiastic, dedicated and experts in their fields. Our consultants, physiotherapists and specialist nursing staff all work together as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver expert orthopaedic care.

Our consultants have high standards to meet, from holding specialist NHS posts to delivering expertise in complex sub-specialty surgery. Our physiotherapists and orthopaedic nurses are trained to a level where their specialties reflect those of the consultants. And it doesn’t stop there.

In addition to the specialist care from your chosen orthopaedic surgeon, Spire Cardiff Hospital offers the highest standards in support services.

    • consultative services for the care of patients undergoing complex orthopaedic surgery including critical care facilities
    • state-of-the-art clinical equipment including imaging facilities such as MRI and CT scanning
    • experienced musculo-skeletal and neuro-radiologists assisting with image-guided surgery
    • blood tests and diagnostic imaging on a 24-hour basis, as well as blood bank facilities for transfusions in the unlikely event this is needed
    • readily available consultants for occupational therapy, cardiology, respiratory medicine and associated specialties as well as specialist orthopaedic anaesthetics

  • Clinical quality through governance

Clinical governance forms an important part of setting the standards for establishing our Centre of Excellence. That’s why we’ve published our clinical outcome data, which includes rates of MRSA infection, surgical site infection, returns to theatre and re-admissions - all specifically for orthopaedic patients. Our data forms part of the UK National Joint Registry so you can be assured that our high standards are always maintained and are regularly monitored. We also participate in the Welsh Healthcare Associated Infection Programme in collaboration with the National Public Health Service for Wales.

It is important that the Centre of Excellence remains leading edge. That’s why we provide a regular programme of education for medical, nursing, theatre and allied health staff in orthopaedic surgery, as well as delivering an exemplary orthopaedic educational programme for referring physicians and physiotherapists.

No matter what your concerns are, we have a range of information to help you understand the choice of procedures, what they involve and the associated risks and benefits.

Our centre continually seeks to improve surgical techniques and patient care through research. We also work with key innovators and manufacturers to ensure patients have access to cutting edge technology and prosthetic implants, such as the Gender-Specific knee implant and Menaflex synthetic replacement for knee cartilage, micro hip replacement, computer guided technology and minimally invasive joint replacement surgery.
