I am a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of ischaemic heart disease (angina). My major area of expertise is coronary angiography, complex coronary angioplasty and treatments for refractory angina. I am also interested in valvular heart disease and atrial fibrillation. I also provide medico-legal opinions.

To date, I have performed over 8,000 angiograms and over 4,000 angioplasties - the majority of which have been performed from the wrist. I have also within this number treated over 1,000 acute heart attack patients with angioplasty. In many of these patients I performed intra-vascular ultrasound or infra-red imaging.

I am the lead Interventional Cardiologist at the University Hospital of Wales and Director of the Catheterisation Laboratories. I'm also a member of NICE Technology Appraisal Committee D and travel to Manchester on a monthly basis to participate in drug appraisal.

I was born in Pontypool and studied medicine at the University of Wales College of Medicine, qualifying in 1992. I commenced specialist cardiology registrar training in London in 1996.

In 1999 I had the opportunity to spend a year in Vancouver undertaking an echocardiography fellowship and attained a wide experience of transthoracic, transoesophageal and 3D echocardiography. After a year back in St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London gaining skills in coronary angioplasty, I crossed the Atlantic once more to spend three years in Washington, DC. During my time there I spent two years in basic science research studying the effects of stem cells on blood vessel regeneration, the results of which I was fortunate to publish in well-respected journals. For my third year at the Washington Hospital Center I completed an interventional fellowship spending 10 hours a day in one of the hospital's eleven catheterisation labs undertaking coronary angioplasty. I was appointed in Cardiff as a consultant cardiologist in 2007.
