    Professor Halcox leads an active translational vascular research program in Cardiff University and collaborates with leading academics across the UK and Europe. His work is published regularly in major peer-reviewed journals and has generated grant income in excess of £2.5 million.

    More about Prof Julian Halcox

    Professor Halcox is a clinician scientist with a special interest in vascular biology and cardiovascular disease prevention. He is a Consultant Cardiologist at the University Hospital of Wales with an academic base in the Wales Heart Research Institute in the Cardiff University School of Medicine.

    A graduate of the University of Cambridge, he trained in cardiology at The London Chest, St. Bartholomew’s and University College London Hospitals also spending 3 years as a Visiting Scientist in the US National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.

    He is an international leader in the field of preventive cardiovascular medicine and has been involved in the development of European as well as local guidelines for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. He is an active member of several national and international specialist associations, review boards and industry clinical advisory boards and lectures regularly on topics related to vascular biology, cardiovascular risk assessment and prevention of cardiovascular disease at local, national and international meetings.

    As a general cardiologist  Professor Halcox cares for patients with all types of cardiovascular disease, but has particular expertise in the investigation and treatment of patients with coronary artery disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol as well as advanced cardiovascular risk assessment and prevention of heart attack and stroke.

  • Professor Halcox moved to Cardiff in late 2007 to take up the chair of Cardiology at Cardiff University. He was previously a British Heart Foundation Lecturer and Consultant Cardiologist at University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospitals.

    He previously competed at a national level in swimming and waterpolo, setting University records and winning British Students’ championships, Cambridge Blues and London University Purples along the way. He now enjoys surfing when he can find the time. Married with three children, his free time is generally spent with family particularly following the musical and sporting activities of the younger Halcoxes.
