Pacemaker implantation


A pacemaker is a small device with one or more leads. The pacemaker sends electrical impulses to the heart to help it produce a regular heart beat. A pacemaker may be required if you suffer from bradycardia, a heart block or heart failure. The device will last around 5-10 years before it may need to be replaced.

What's involved in having a pacemaker implanted?

Implanting a pacemaker is a minor surgical procedure, usually performed using local anaesthetic. The device is inserted under the skin, just below the collar bone and the leads are placed into the heart through a vein. The procedure takes about an hour and you may then spend one night in hospital before going home. You can usually quickly resume normal activities.
