Mr Peter Lewis qualified from Cardiff in 1999 and after completing initial surgical training in South Wales went on to further his training in the West Midlands. Based at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, one of only 5 purely orthopaedic hospitals in the country, he spent time with the internationally recognised Joint Replacement and Orthopaedic Oncology teams, mastering simple to highly complex lower limb joint reconstruction procedures. Further experience was gained at the major trauma unit in Selly Oak and in 2007 was appointed as honorary clinical lecturer to the University of Birmingham. In 2008 he travelled to Toronto, Canada to complete a year’s specialist fellowship in complex hip & knee replacement surgery working with pioneers in the specialty at St. Michael’s Hospital and the University of Toronto. He returned to the UK in 2009 and in August took up the post of Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon to Cwm Taf Local Health Board, working at both Prince Charles and Royal Glamorgan Hospitals.
He has been involved in all aspects of orthopaedic research and has published numerous articles and a book chapter on both the basic science and clinical outcomes of joint replacement surgery. He has given over 40 international presentations, presenting at orthopaedic meetings around the world from Seoul to Hawaii to Sydney.
Despite a love for travel and a passion to learn every aspect of orthopaedic surgery from specialist units in both the UK and around the world, ultimately returning to his home of Wales was always Mr Lewis’ goal. Having always been a keen sports fan he can again enjoy the international rugby tests at the Millennium Stadium, although time in North America has broadened his sporting horizons, now also an avid Toronto Blue Jays baseball fan.
