I was appointed as a General and Endocrine Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff in 2010. As well as treating emergency surgical patients, my specialist interests are endocrine surgery (thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal), minimally invasive hernia and gallbladder surgery, day surgery and medical education. I undertook my higher surgical training in Oxford, where I completed an MD with the Molecular Endocrinology group, and a national Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) Fellowship in endocrine surgery.

I am an experienced general surgeon and perform keyhole surgery for gallstones and keyhole surgery for groin and incisional hernia, and ‘lumps and bumps’ removal. My specialist interest is endocrine surgery including thyroid surgery for overactive thyroid disease, benign thyroid lumps (goitre) and thyroid cancer, parathyroid removal for high blood calcium and adrenal removal for swellings that make excess hormone.

Cardiff is a busy centre for endocrine surgery and I and my colleague perform about 250 endocrine cases per year. As a consultant, I have performed more than 350 thyroid cases, more than 200 parathyroid cases and approaching 100 keyhole operations for adrenal gland disease. The cure rate for hyperparathyroidism is more 95% and the rate of conversion to open for adrenal gland operations is 6%. I also perform a lot of gallbladder (rate of conversion to open less than 1% in 5 years) and hernia surgery (both keyhole and open).

I am currently Quality and Safety lead for General surgery in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (2013-present).

In addition to my clinical work, I am Director of Year five for the Cardiff University School of Medicine MBBCh course (2012-present). This involves helping to train and assess the Cardiff University Medical School medical students as they prepare to become junior doctors.

As well as co-authoring book chapters and peer-reviewed publications in my field, I recently helped devise and co-hosted the RCS Edinburgh webinar series on endocrine surgery topics in conjunction with the Royal College of Surgeons and the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons (BAETS) and I have also contributed to the BAETS/Ethicon operative video series of endocrine surgical operations for higher surgical trainees.
