Surgery and laser treatment for glaucoma

I have extensive experience in general ophthalmology. However, my particular interests are cataract surgery and glaucoma.

I was a clinical research fellow at the Bristol Eye Hospital (1998-1991), where I was responsible for setting up and conducting the Medical Research Council (MRC) trial of 'Day-case Versus In-patient Cataract Surgery'. I was awarded the higher degree of MD from the University of Bristol for this work. I did my Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology in the Northeast of England (1991-1995), primarily based at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle. During this period, I was granted a funded Fellowship in Glaucoma and Catarct Surgery in Perth, Western Australia, for one year.

In 1995, I was appointed as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. I introduced the technique of phacoemulsification for cataract surgery to the region. This is still the gold standard technique for cataract surgery used today. Subsequently, I set up the phacoemulsification service at the Spire Cardiff Hospital.
