Background Information
Professional profile:

Dan joined the Cardiff eye unit at the Heath hospital in 2009 after a fellowship at the prestigious Vancouver orbital clinic where he learnt many new techniques including endonasal lacrimal surgery.

After qualifying from St Andrews and Manchester in 1999, Dan undertook his ophthalmology training in Glasgow and Newcastle. He is a competent cataract surgeon and is also happy treating all common eyelid complaints such as ptosis, ectropion, entropion, eyelid bags and blepharospasm. He sees many patients with dry and watery eyes and also more complex orbital problems, especially those with thyroid eye disease.

Dan is passionate about world blindness, running an eye project with the Samburu people in Kenya. He is also an international authority on high altitude eye problems and sporting eye injuries having published and lectured widely in this area; he collected the highest ever eye data on Mount Everest.

His research achievements have led to a number of awards including the Keeler scholarship, the Lachlan McNeill scholarship, the Pfizer ophthalmology medal for Scotland and a Royal Society of Medicine travel award. He is on a wilderness medical training faculty, is currently leading a national ocular trauma study and is part of international research into both thyroid eye disease and endonasal lacrimal surgery.

Personal profile:

Dan was brought up in Shrewsbury and now lives in Cardiff with his wife and two young daughters. His spare time is spent with his family exploring the Welsh countryside; he is also a qualified ski instructor and a keen mountaineer.
