I am a specialist hand and wrist surgeon. My elective and trauma practice exclusively involves conditions and injuries affecting the hand and wrist. This includes sports injuries, all hand and wrist fractures and soft tissue injuries. On the elective side this includes all hand and wrist conditions for example carpal tunnel and other nerve release operations, Dupuytren's contracture, trigger digits, arthritis surgery, joint fusions and replacements and wrist arthroscopy. I strongly believe that if a condition can be successfully treated without an operation then a non-operative route should be taken. In this regard, I work closely with specialist hand therapists who can provide therapy and splinting and I also administer steroid injections when it is indicated.

I keep an up to date log book of my operations. I also collect outcomes of the procedures that I perform. As a consultant, up until 12 August 2018, I performed 3,177 trauma hand operations and 10,065 elective hand operations. The numbers for the most common operations are: Carpal tunnel decompression's - 3,609, Dupuytren's fasciectomy - 1,100, Ulna nerve release - 729, Trigger finger release - 875, Wrist arthroscopy - 469, Trapeziectomy - 441.

During six years of registrar training I spent three of those years in specialist hand training posts. My final year of training was at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby. It is an internationally renowned centre of excellence where I received advanced training in hand and wrist surgery. From my appointment in 2007 as a Consultant Hand Surgeon I have established a specialist surgical practice that is supported by a team of specialist hand therapists. I receive tertiary referrals for hand conditions from other hospitals in South Wales. I was awarded a 'Top Doctors' award in 2021 and 2022, which is an award only given to 50 consultants of all surgical specialties in the UK.

I am the educational supervisor for the Foundation year two orthopaedic trainees. I also train registrar surgeons in hand surgery. I am an honorary clinical teacher at the University of Wales.

As a specialist I am on the editorial board of the European Journal of Hand Surgery. I am also Chair of the committee that runs the British Diploma in Hand Surgery. This is a diploma that's backed by the University of Manchester and is a highly sought after qualification for senior hand trainees who will become specialist hand consultants. I have written chapters on wrist fractures for orthopaedic text books and scientific articles from my own research.

I enjoy my work in hand surgery. Outside of work I spend a lot of time with my wife and children and their hobbies. I keep fit by jogging weekly and do karate for over three hours each week. For non exercise I allow myself one evening a week for online gaming with a friend and my two brothers.
