I am a Consultant Cardiologist at the University Hospital of Wales, where I am "Lead Clinician" of clinical echocardiography. I am responsible for all aspects of this service and provide sub-speciality expertise in complex transthoracic cases, transoesophageal echocardiography, intraoperative transoesophageal echocardiography and dobutamine stress echocardiography. As a general cardiologist, I partake in cardiology on-call and have recently started an out patient clinic. Together with Dr Dirk Wilson and Dr Peter Groves, I run the Adult Congenital Heart Disease service.

At Spire Cardiff Hospital I have introduced an out-patient transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) service. Referrals from clinicians for routine TTE should be sent to the Cardiology Centre, where a weekly list is performed on a Monday afternoon. This new servcie can be used for the investigation of cardiac symptoms and where de novo cardiac diagnoses are made, referral for cardiology consultation may be appropriate either for follow up of patients with cardiovascular disease or for preoperative (non cardiac surgery) assessment.

Referrals for in-patient TTE at Spire Cardiff Hospital can be made on an ad hoc basis, also via the radiology department. This service has, up until now, not been available. It is anticipated that in-patient TTE studies will, where appropriate, be performed before or after the routine daily activities of the Cardiology Centre. It is unlikely that a 24 hour service can be provided at present.

Patients requiring transoesophageal echocardiography or dobutamine stress echocardiography may be referred via Spire Cardiff Hospital or my secretary at University Hospital of Wales. Currently, these studies are performed at UHW only.
