Keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery was introduced to routine practice over twenty years ago and continues to offers patients a number of potential benefits including a better surgical outcome and quicker recovery with less surgical scarring.
At the cutting edge of this minimally invasive surgery is a new innovation - Single Inscision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS).
SILS goes one step further than conventional keyhole surgery by allowing operations to be performed though just one small cut rather than the standard three or even four incisions.
Using a SILS Port, our specialist Consultant Laparoscopic Surgeons Mr Christopher Wong and Mr Simon Phillips who have performed advanced conventional laparoscopic surgery for many years, can now offer surgery as a single incision - which in some cases may be through the tummy button. A small incision is made and a flexible soft-foam SILS Port is inserted to protect the surrounding area. State of the art articulated instruments allow the surgery to be undertaken.
The SILS technique can also be used for a range of general surgical procedures including; Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal), colorectal surgery and gastric banding surgery for weight loss surgery. The resulting scar is less conspicuous and patients seem to be able to return to normal activity quickly.
