Radiofrequency ablation of varicose veins

January 2009

Varicose veins affect around one in three women at some time during their lives, and around one in six men. Radio frequency ablation or RFA is a new treatment for varicose veins available at Spire Cardiff Hospital.

The RFA technique allows patients to be treated in an ambulatory care setting under local anaesthetic. Patients have an ultrasound scan during an approximately 30 minute procedure.

The advantages of RFA:

  • patients are able to walk out after treatment
  • patients are able to return to work the same day
  • it is the nearest alternative to laser treatment yet radio frequency does not impose safety restrictions associated with the use of the laser. Additionally, this method allows us to treat patients who otherwise would be considered unfit for conventional surgery.

The consultant offering this service at Spire Cardiff Hospital is Consultant General Surgeon Miss Susan Hill.
