Sports Massage Clinic at Cardiff Centre of Excellence for Orthopaedic Care

  • Spire Cardiff Hospital's Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence offers the highest standard of service to compliment our orthopaedic care. Our dedicated Sports Massage Clinic allows patients with sport related injuries access to specialist sports massage therapists. This service is led by Mr Gareth Green and Mr Richard Stevenson, and offers a dedicated clinic providing gentle massage which can improve circulation and range of movement and relieves muscular tension.

    Sports massage can be used to:

    • stretch and loosen muscles 
    • improve blood flow 
    • improve movement of lymph and oxygen throughout the body  
    • help to restore function to injured “soft tissues” (muscles, tendons and ligaments) 
    • remove metabolic waste resulting from exercise and inactivity


    Massage can aid recovery from injuries and may be used in conjunction with physiotherapy.

    What is sports massage?

    It is a deep tissue massage that loosens tight muscles and breaks down adhesions in muscle fibres. It can be part of your training in connection with a warm up or a cool down. Sports massage can help to:

    • prevent injuries 
    • maintain the function of muscles 
    • helps your recovery from intense training

  • Does sports massage hurt?

    No form of massage should hurt. Tender areas of tension or injury sometimes needs to be handled with some degree of pressure which enables the deep tissue work to break up adhesions in the muscle or scar tissue. Communication between yourself and your therapist is essential.

    Specific areas that treatment can focus on:

    • neck and shoulder massage 
    • back massage 
    • leg massage 
    • arm and hand massage 
    • full body massage

  • Can I bring someone with me to the session?

    Yes, you are very welcome to bring somebody along. However, children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who must remain throughout the treatment.

  • Do I need to get undressed?

    This depends on the area being treated;  just wear loose comfortable clothing ie; trousers which you can pull up over your knees.
