My interest in urology began in medical school where I was fortunate enough to be in one of the premier units in the country (Newcastle upon Tyne) to train in this speciality. Following graduation I became an anatomy instructor and basic surgical trainee where I received a good grounding in the principles of surgery. During this time I developed an interest in prostate cancer and to pursue this I undertook a PhD in cancer biology. I then trained in surgical and academic urology in the North East where I was a specialist registrar and Clinical Scientist. I began my career as a Consultant Urological Surgeon and University Lecturer in Uro-oncology in Cambridge in April 2008. My current clinical practise includes all aspects of general urology as well as a specialist practise in prostatic disease and prostate cancer. I have a strong interest in individualised treatment for patients and effective communication to ensure that they are well informed before a treatment is started. A key part of my practise is in treating men with prostate cancer and how we can select the best treatment option for each person with this disease. As a surgeon I am committed to delivering a high quality surgical service but also exploring new therapies to improve outcomes. Alongside this I lead an active laboratory and clinical research programme which is very closely related to my clinical work. I am a partner in the Cambridge Urology Clinic, together with my Addenbrooke's colleagues, William Turner and Nikesh Thiruchelvam, based exclusively at the Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital.
I am fortunate in having a busy and fulfilling family life and between this and work life can get quite hectic. However when I can I take an active interest in current world affairs, playing music and travelling to new places in the UK and abroad. I also have a great interest in food both the cooking of it and eating it!
