Background Information
Professional profile:

I am a specialist Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Clinical Director of Digestive Diseases at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. I have a particular interest in the modern treatment of haemorrhoids, including haemorrhoidal artery ligation (HALO/THD). This is a minimally invasive technique that is associated with minimal post-operative discomfort and a fast return to normal activities, as it avoids painful cuts being made.

I specialise in the use of laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for the treatment of colorectal (bowel) cancer, diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease, having trained in specialist units in the south west of England and the University of Toronto, Canada. Laparoscopic surgery has the advantages of smaller scars, less pain, a quicker recovery with less time in hospital and a faster return to normal activities/work. In addition, I treat all colorectal conditions, including haemorrhoids, fissures, fistulas, prolapse and anal skin tags. I treat patients with rectal bleeding, and regularly perform colonoscopy.

In terms of general surgery, my practice is intentionally limited to the treatment of groin and abdominal wall hernias.

I am a member of Council of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, a member of Council of the Royal Society of Medicine Section of Coloproctology, and an Associate Lecturer at the University of Cambridge. I maintain an active research programme, and have published over 50 research articles (including publications in prestigious journals such as the Lancet and Nature Reviews Cancer) and book chapters, and recently edited a textbook for trainee surgeons . I have been awarded several research prizes (including the Patey Prize and John of Arderne Medal) and travelling fellowships.I am fully committed to training future generations of surgeons, and am an Educational and Clinical Supervisor for surgical trainees. I am the current Chair of Education and Training for the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, and have served as a Programme Director for Core Surgical Training.

Personal profile:

My spare time is mainly spent with my wife and 2 sons. I maintain a keen interest in rugby union, having previously represented Cambridge University for many years, culminating in playing scrum-half for the winning Blues side in the 1994 Varsity Match at Twickenham.
