Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital launches new state-of-the-art Hearing and Balance Clinic

The ultramodern facility brings together an expert team of ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeons specialising in hearing and balance solutions.

By combining their extensive experience in all aspects of ear surgery, including hearing implantation, leading consultants Mr James Tysome, Mr Patrick Axon and Mr Neil Donnelly are able to treat conditions such as hearing loss, balance problems, tinnitus and skull base tumours.

New services at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital will encompass the entire patient journey – from consultations to help identify causes of conditions and advise on options available – through to state-of-the-art equipment that can deliver accurate diagnosis and provide targeted treatments.

Progressive hearing loss increasingly affects social interaction and quality of life, which can lead to social isolation. This affects 40% of those over 50 and 70% of those over 70 years of age, with effective interaction being the main problem – especially in challenging environments like the work place and at social gatherings.

The Cambridge Hearing and Balance consultants stated: “It is a sad fact that the average time from adults noticing hearing impairment to seeking help is 10 years. For children, hearing loss can lead to delay in speech and language development as well as poor performance at school. Parents are invariably the first to notice a problem and early action on those concerns can save worry and needless treatment delay.”

The new fully-equipped balance suite at Spire Cambridge Lea is designed to test hearing and balance and offers treatments by skilled consultants for hearing loss with services that include advice and recommendations together with surgery that can improve hearing, while treatment for balance problems provides an individually tailored programme of rehabilitation physiotherapy.

The consultants conclude: “Dizziness and unsteadiness affects 30% of those younger than 65 years, rising to approximately 60% at 80 years. There are many, often complex and interlinked reasons that underlie imbalance so a thoughtful multidisciplinary approach to finding a solution is essential.”
