Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital awarded Best Public Service Architecture for East of England

Following a phenomenal 14-month project, Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital has scooped an acclaimed Five-Star Award in the Public Service Architecture category for its distinctive refurbishment.

The award-winning design concept, which saw a transformation of the reception area and out-patient department, including an eye clinic, enhances both the hospital facility and its reputation for providing high quality care.

Toni Gilson, Business Development Manager at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, says: “Our vision was to create the best surroundings for patients and consultants that could equal our high standards of patient care, service and comfort. I am delighted that Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital has received such recognition in the East of England.”

The highest scoring Five-Star winners from each of the categories will now go forward to represent the UK in the 2014-2015 International Property Awards, competing against other regional winners from Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, Asia Pacific and Europe to find the World’s Best in each category.

Teams at Spire Healthcare Estates and Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital worked closely with the leading London practice, Sonnemann Toon Architects, to create the design-led evolution.

Associate for the practice, Agata Zamasz, comments: “We were very fortunate to win Spire’s design concept competition to work on this project and very impressed by how open to new design ideas  the team at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital were.”

While the concept looked across the entire Spire Healthcare hospital network, it focused on a number of key elements that were prevalent to the brand. The programme then proceeded with a development of ideas and inspiration, evaluating the hospital’s specific needs, considering space enhancing strategies and future plans.

“We wanted to achieve a balance between corporate identity and individual character", says Agata Zamasz. “Primary colour palette of key repeatable elements was derived from the logo and purpose-made joinery in warm oak selected to harmonise with existing estate finishes.

"The hospital selected a theme mineral image from which an individual colour scheme was sampled to express their unique identity. This secondary palette was used for high-quality furniture and finishes, site-specific artwork, feature panelling and bespoke glazing to create a welcoming and relaxed environment. The design incorporates a correlation with Cambridgeshire themes, that were close to the heart of the hospital and its patients.”

Agata Zamasz concludes: “Just 14 months from the development of original concepts to arrive at final design solutions is a credit to excellent teamwork and delivery. From the design team to the contractors – the entire project was  very fruitful, with strong cooperation and contribution from all involved. Work on the scheme has been hugely rewarding, so it’s especially great to see the final effect acknowledged and awarded in this way.”

The £1.4m enhancement of Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital completes the third stage of its 2014 redevelopment to transform existing spaces and improve patient welfare.

Andrea McNally from the Estates team at Spire Healthcare, says: “As a result, we have updated our consulting rooms and reception, beyond what we could have imagined. It has turned our reception from what was something of a quiet waiting room into a relaxed atmosphere for the patients.”

Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital has invested more than £11m during the past seven years with an ongoing programme of development to deliver some of the latest healthcare services, technologies and equipment. Built in 1987, the hospital now employs more than 250 people and works in partnership with 240 high-level consultants. It offers 68 beds, 22 consulting rooms, five theatres, onsite MRI, CT, ultrasound, X-ray, dexa scanners, a discreet womens’ health suite and stand-alone physiotherapy facility.
