Consultant Mr Richard Price conducts extensive surgery to restore quality of life to a patient following excessive weight loss in Channel 4 programme
Mr Richard Price, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, will be featuring on Channel 4’s flagship health programme, Embarrassing Bodies, this month, where he will conduct bariatric surgery on a patient who has lost significant weight. As its name suggests, Embarrassing Bodies is a programme centred on helping patients with health issues that they find embarrassing or that they have found no help with treating previously.
Glen Hutton, from Ipswich met Embarrassing Bodies resident GP, to discuss the problems he was having with excess skin. Following the doctor’s advice, Glen visited Mr Richard Price at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital in Impington, Cambridge, where he performed a “Belt Lipectomy”.
“Mr Hutton had made a huge effort to lose weight and now found himself with lots of excess skin. He had lost almost half his body weight and now had folds of skin around his abdomen, which were causing lots of problems, both medical and psychological. He was a particularly good candidate because of his high level of motivation and realistic expectations,” says Mr Price.
The Extended Abdominoplasty (or Belt Lipectomy) procedure removes skin folds from around the whole waist, leaving a scar that travels all the way around the abdomen. Although it appears to be simply a bigger form of an abdominoplasty, it is in fact a much more involved operation and takes significantly longer. Glens operation took over 6 hours, and he was in hospital for several days. His aftercare was very involved and required several visits to Mr Price in his clinic. Overall, however, Glen did very well because of his exceptional motivation.
Embarrassing Bodies has on average 3.5 million viewers per episode and its website is one of Channel 4’s top three online properties alongside Big Brother and Hollyoaks and has won a BAFTA for interactivity in 2009.
Mr Richard Price and his patient Glen Hutton will be featured on Embarrassing Bodies, Channel 4 at 9pm on 13th June 2011.
