October 2011Consultant Vascular Surgeon conducts varicose vein surgery on Channel 4 programme
Mr Michael Gaunt, consultant Vascular Surgeon at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, will be featuring on Channel 4’s flagship health programme, Embarrassing Bodies, this month, where he will conduct varicose vein surgery on a patient suffering from varicose veins and vulval varices.
As its name suggests, Embarrassing Bodies is a programme centred on helping patients with health issues that they find embarrassing or that they have found no help with treating previously.
Hayley Thorne, 30, from Peterborough met Embarrassing Bodies resident GP, Dr Dawn Harper to discuss the varicose veins and vulval varices she had been experiencing. Following Dr Harper’s advice, Hayley visited Mr Michael Gaunt at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital in Cambridge, where he performed the surgery.
Up to 40% of women and 25% of men will be affected by varicose veins at some time in their life. Symptoms range from tired or aching legs, itchiness and restless legs to venous eczema, thrombosis, bleeding and ulceration of the lower legs.
Embarrassing Bodies has on average 3.5 million viewers per episode and its website is one of Channel 4’s top three online properties alongside Big Brother and Hollyoaks and has won a BAFTA for interactivity in 2009.
Mr Gaunt and Hayley will be featured on Embarrassing Bodies, Channel 4 at 9pm on Monday 10th October 2011. For further information on the services available at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital please call 01223 266900.
