      Professional profile:

      Mr Smith is a Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon with a particular interest in hand and wrist surgery, reconstructive plastic surgery, skin cancer management and cosmetic surgery.  With regard to the hand surgery he undertakes the full spectrum of hand surgery including tendon and nerve injuries, nerve compression syndromes, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, Dupuytren’s Contracture, Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis of the hand, joint replacements and management of hand trauma.

      With regard to skin cancer management Mr Smith has been involved in the treatment of malignant Melanoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinomas and has undertaken frozen section controlled excisions of Basal Cell Carcinomas (Moh’s) and reconstructions of any defects using local flaps and skin grafts where necessary.

      In the cosmetic field Mr Smith has a particular interest in rhinoplasty and facial rejuvenation surgery, including laser resurfacing and blepharoplasty, breast surgery (reduction, augmentation and ptosis correction), liposuction, abdominoplasty and body re-contouring, as well as non-surgical rejuvenation procedures.

      He trained in Glasgow, London and the United States.  In Glasgow he was involved in research with Cannesburn the Centre of Plastic Surgery and at that time was involved in developing the anatomical basis of the groin flap and undertaking research into axial pattern flaps in general.

      Mr Smith was a clinical instructor in Plastic Surgery at Duke University, North Carolina which is regarded by many as the premier training centre in the United States.  That year he concentrated on cosmetic surgery and microsurgery. 

      Mr Smith was a Christine Kleinert Fellow in hand surgery at Louiseville, Kentucky, which is also regarded as the premier hand surgery training centre in the world.

      He was awarded 1st prize in the Resident Competition in the United States in 1979 and was also awarded Pulvertaft prize for hand surgery on his return to the UK.

      Once back in London he completed his training at Mount Vernon Hospital where he was appointed consultant in 1980 and was appointed consultant at Great Ormond Street in 1988.

      Mr Smith has been invited as a Visiting Professor in Plastic Surgery to Australia, South Africa, Canada, as well as New York University, University of Louiseville, and Stanford University in the US.

      He has been in consultant practice for 24 years with an adult and a paediatric practice.

      Personal profile:

      Mr Smith has published over 70 articles in peer reviewed journals on a wide variety of plastic surgical subjects including skin flaps design, development of new skin flaps, dupuytren’s contracture and congenital hand surgery as well as cosmetic surgery of the breasts.

      He has also published 20 chapters in textbooks and has published 2 textbooks personally on the subject of hand surgery.

      Mr Smith founded RAFT (Reconstruction of Appearance and Function Trust) based at Mount Vernon.  This is a postgraduate institution that funds research into plastic surgery and has been responsible for training 15% of the current plastic surgeons in the UK.  Initially founded by Paul Smith, Patrick McNamee and Sir Robin Chichester-Clark.

      The achievements of the unit include 6 Huntarian Professorships.
