Professional profile:

Dr Roland Wensel has been a Consultant Cardiologist in the NHS at Watford General Hospital and St Mary's Hospital in London since 2009.

Dr Wensel leads the non-invasive cardiac imaging department at Watford General and has established stress-echocardiography and 3D transesophageal echocardiography there. Recently he has developed a cardiac CT service for NHS patients. He treats cardiac inpatients and runs a weekly outpatient clinic coverering all aspects of Cardiology.

At Imperial College (St Mary's Hospital) Dr Wensel runs an outpatient clinic for patients with heart valve disease, and performs echocardiograms. He also supervises the cardiopulmonary exercise testing servcie; a test that assess the degree of exercise limitation cause by heart and lung diseases.

Dr Wensel is involved in reaserch about heart failure, heart valve disease and coronary heart disease.

At Spire Bushey Hospital he sees patients with coronary heart disease (angina/chest pain), heart failure (breathlessness, exercise intolerance), heart valve disease (murmurs), atrial fibrillation and palpitations.

Dr Wensel's professional ethos is moulded by a holistic approach to his patients that includes a comprehensive assessment and a detailed and candid discussion about their problems and the available treatment options.

Personal profile:

I am married with four children. My main hobbies are sailing and alpine skiing. I have participated in competitive sailing since the age of nine and attended a sailing college in East Berlin. In 1988 I won a junior world championship in the Olympic 470-class. I came third in the annual NHS regatta, with my crew, for the last three years in a row. I also enjoy mountain hiking and alpine skiing with my family. I speak German and English fluently and have a basic understanding of Russian.
