Dr Smith trained in medicine at Guys’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London and specialised in cardiology at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, and the London Chest Hospital. He was jointly appointed as an NHS consultant in 2008 to Barnet, Chase Farm and The London Chest Hospitals (Barts and the London NHS Trust).
Dr Smith is trained in all aspects of cardiology but has sub-specialised in invasive and interventional cardiology, and coronary angioplasty and stenting in particular. He has an interest in complex coronary intervention including rotablation and the minimally invasive treatment of longstanding arterial blockages (chronic occlusions). He has undertaken research in the treatment of Heart Attacks, and participated in the development of the London Chest Hospital’s Heart Attack Centre, now one of the largest services of its kind in the UK. He is currently performing research into new technologies to help support the heart through surgery and in the treatment of heart failure. He has a strong commitment to the training and education of future interventional cardiologists and is a Director of the Cardiovascular Training Institute at Barts and the London NHS Trust.
