Consultant undertakes London to Paris cycle ride

Consultant gynaecologist surgeon Malcolm Padwick and a group of friends organised a charity cycle ride from Trafalgar Square to the Eiffel Tower, all to be undertaken during a 24 hour period. The aim was to raise funds for the Hospice of St Francis, Berkhamsted, in honour of Susan, the wife of team member Guy McGinn, who had spent the last two weeks of her life there before finally succumbing to cancer at the age of 47.

A team of eight cyclists and two back-up drivers set off in glorious weather from London at 3pm on Thursday 3 July, cycling directly to Newhaven for a four-hour ferry crossing to Dieppe. The team disembarked at 3.30am to be greeted by cold rain which continued on and off for the whole 11-hour cycle to Paris.

The journey was interrupted by nine punctures and two torn tyres, shared out between the the team and all occurring in France. Fortunately there were no major mishaps or accidents and the experience of road cycling in France was fantastic. French drivers were all so courteous to cyclists; especially in Paris, always giving way even at major junctions. The whole team completed the ride successfully and a total of nearly £4,000 has been collected to date.

Mr Padwick said:

"We're fortunate to have such wonderful local hospices but need to remember that these facilities are run almost entirely with charitable donations. We are still collecting and donations can be made via a link on the website:"
