Electric shock wave therapy (ESWT)

  • Electric Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) employs high pressure sound waves which are thought to stimulate the body’s natural growth & repair hormones. The Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) method of accelerating repair has been used to treat sports injuries in athletes for the past decade.

High energy sound waves are created and focused on the injury using a special pad. Shock waves are repeatedly applied to the injury area, to break down scar tissue and calcifications in the area, which in chronic cases the body is unable to repair itself.

A course of treatment usually requires three sessions, each taking about 45 - 60 minutes, and includes advice on retraining of weak muscles related to the injury. ESWT has a success rate of about 70% according to published studies. Pain relief can occur in the period immediately following the treatment and permanent results 8 - 12 weeks following the last session.
