First things first
- If you notice a change in your breast, you should visit your GP who will be able to refer you to one of our specialist breast consultants
- If you have already been given a diagnosis and you wish to be seen privately or pay for your own treatment, your existing hospital can refer you to our specialist services for treatment
- If you have had a breast screening mammogram and require further investigations these can be carried out at our hospital
- If you have a family history and would like to start screening early we offer this service to patients over 35
- If you are over 73 and not receiving screening invitations from the NHS you can self-refer – any reports will be sent to your GP
Breast clinics are available Monday to Saturday and you can be seen within 24 hours of enquiring. Your appointment will be with an experienced consultant breast surgeon and a specialist breast nurse. At the initial assessment, your consultant will discuss your concerns and take a full medical history.
Before any diagnostic tests are completed, your consultant will carry out a breast examination so that a decision can be made on which investigations should be undertaken to suit your individual needs. The team aim to carry out all the investigations needed at your first appointment using state-of-the-art equipment that can help detect breast abnormalities.
Diagnostic tests and investigations
Our highly trained specialist consultant breast radiologists and pathologists aim to get results to you within 24 hours or on the same day of your assessment. Patients are offered a personalised breast assessment that may include one or more of the following investigations:

Treatment and care
In the 2011 National Mastectomy and Breast Cancer Audit, Spire Bushey Hospital’s breast team were rated 100% by patients for their satisfaction with the consultant and clinical team.
To make the process as straightforward as possible for you, we offer flexible appointment times and calm, clean surroundings.
If you require surgery, your consultant will explain and discuss the most suitable options for you before carrying out your operation. A pre-assessment will take place a few days before you are admitted for surgery.
Your breast care nurse will support you throughout your stay. You will be looked after in your own private room and cared for by our experienced nursing team, who will do everything they can to make your recovery as swift and as comfortable as possible. Your visitors can come to see you at any time, provided you don’t need an undisturbed rest period, and drinks and meals for them can also be arranged.
Coping with treatment can be emotionally challenging for you and your family and friends. It’s important to us that you feel safe, confident and reassured every step of the way.
Spire Bushey Hospital was one of the first private hospitals to form a multi-disciplinary team of breast surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, histopathologists and specialist nurses. This highly specialist team meets on a weekly basis to discuss individual patient cases and works together to create a dedicated treatment plan for each patient. It is widely recognised that having a committed multi-disciplinary team to consider all the treatment options results in the most effective care plan for the patient, taking into account age, general health, the cancer stage (its size and whether it has spread) and its grade (which indicates how quickly it may grow or develop).
Our highly experienced team of surgeons and specialist support staff work together to deliver your treatment and care. They aim to ensure you are looked after from the moment of your diagnosis, throughout your treatment and after-care.
Spire Bushey Hospital offers a full and comprehensive range of oncoplastic and reconstructive breast procedures. For some patients we are able to offer immediate reconstruction, which is performed at the same time as your initial surgery. All options will be fully explored with your consultant to find the best solution for you.
