Procedures offered for hip replacement surgery at Spire Bushey Hospital

At Spire Bushey, we have wide experience in hip replacement surgery in our clean, contemporary facilities. Your consultant may recommend:

  • Traditional (posterior) hip replacement – performed by the surgeon making an incision of roughly eight to ten inches along the side of the hip to access the hip joint
  • Robotic hip replacement using the CORI surgical system. With robotics-assisted surgery, your surgeon uses the CORI Surgical System to create a customised 3D digital model of your hip. This three-dimensional view helps your surgeon finalise and verify the right size implant for you and create a detailed surgical plan for how your replacement will be placed in order to optimise movement and function.
  • Bilateral hip replacement, when both hips are replaced at the same time

At Spire Bushey, our facilities include six operating theatres, three including laminar flow which regulates air flow to reduce risk of infection.

Getting here

You can find us in Bushey, Hertfordshire. Spire Bushey Hospital and Spire Bushey Diagnostic Centre are easy to access from the M1 and M25 motorways, as well as by under and overground train stations. We have free parking on both sites for you and your visitors.

Your consultations

Your initial consultation will take place at Spire Bushey Diagnostic centre which offers the latest facilities and diagnostics. All of our rooms are accessible, making things easier if you have difficulty walking.

During your consultations, we'll:

  • Ask about your medical history
  • Say whether you need blood tests, an X-ray, and/or an MRI or CT scan so they can examine your hip in more detail
  • Tell you about the different types of artificial hip joints – also called prosthetics – as well as the surgical methods
  • Explain about the different anaesthetic options
  • Discuss the potential risks and complications and how they may affect you
  • Give you a chance to ask any questions you have about your surgery

Once you’ve decided to go ahead with hip surgery, your consultant and your physiotherapist will explain your recovery plan. Both your initial consultation and tests at this stage are charged separately to the cost of any treatment needed.

Hip replacement: your procedure

On the day of your procedure, our ward staff will show you to your room and get you settled in. You’ll have all the comforts and conveniences you’d expect to find in your own home. You should be with us for around two to six days.

You’ll meet your consultant and surgical team who’ll prepare you for your operation. If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in your room while you have your operation.

Anaesthetic options

You’ll probably have a general anaesthetic, so you’ll be completely asleep. However, sometimes it’s preferable or necessary to have a spinal or epidural anaesthetic, where you’re numb from the waist down. If so, your anaesthetist can also give you sedatives to help you relax during the operation.

Head to our main hip replacement surgery page for more information.

During your operation

Your consultant will make the necessary incisions and begin to remove worn or damaged areas of your hip joint. They’ll then fit your new hip and close your incisions. The operation should take between an hour and an hour and a half.
