Dr Rakowicz is consultant neurologist at Charing Cross and the Hillingdon Hospitals and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College School of Medicine. He completed his medical studies at King's College School of Medicine, London and trained in neurology in Cambridge, Norwich and at the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, London.

His clinical and laboratory research into motor neurone disease culminated in a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He also spent three years at Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, USA, including a year-long neuromuscular fellowship. His continuing interest in the neurological education of candidates for the MRCP diploma in the UK has recently also taken him abroad on a two-month sabbatical to South India as visiting professor in three neurology training centres.

Dr Rakowicz runs a general neurology service covering the complete range of acute and chronic neurological disorders. His special interests include all aspects of neuromuscular disease, including muscle disease, motor neurone disease, peripheral neuropathy, spinal cord and disc disease. He has published papers and review articles on motor neurone disease and muscle diseases.

Dr Rakowicz is interested in classical music and the outdoors. He plays the piano and pipe organ and has sung with several amateur choirs, including two seasons with the St Louis Symphony Chorus. He enjoys all aspects of the open air, including short and medium-distance walking, kayaking and tennis. He is also a keen cook with a particular fondness for Viennese-style gateaux, reflecting his Polish ancestry.
