Background Information
Professional profile:
James Rakshi was appointed Consultant Neurologist in 2003 at the Royal Free, Barnet and Edgware Hospitals. He is also Consultant neurologist for the Marie Foster Neuro-Rehabilitation Centre in Barnet and the Edgware Parkinsons Disease Centre. He was appointed an Honorary Senior Lecturer, University College London in 2005.

He qualified in 1988 from Aberdeen Medical School where he first became interested in Neurology. He developed a particular interest in brain scanning at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where the first UK clinical MRI scanner was built.

He did his general medical training in district general hospitals including Preston, Mayday, Bromley, Farnborough and Ealing hospitals and at St Mary's teaching hospital. He trained in Neurology at National Hospital for Neurology, Queen Square, and at Hammersmith, St George's and Charing Cross hospitals. His clinical neurological experience covers the complete range of acute and chronic neurological disorders.

He undertook his research at the MRC Cyclotron Unit, Hammersmith Hospital. He studied the function of the brain in Parkinsons disease (PD) with positron emission tomography (PET). He is a member of the Amadeus Consortium, an international collaboration of 12 European neuro-imaging centres who are currently undertaking large-scale studies looking at the effect of drug therapy on PD.

Personal profile:
James has many varied interests outside medicine. He is passionate about travelling, which he combines with wildlife and landscape photography and has arranged his own safari to Kenya and more recently joined an expert wildlife expedition to the Galapagos Islands. He is hoping to join a wildlife expedition to the Antartica in 2007. He is an avid Chelsea fan (pre-renaissance!) and season ticket holder and regularly attends their social events.
He however enjoys all sports and is a member of his local gym. He also has a particular interest in classic cars especially Aston Martins.
