Heart health assessment

Heart health assessment at Spire Bushey Hospital

Spire Bushey Hospital is now offering a new service to anyone who is concerned about the health of their heart or the impact their lifestyle is having on their health.

According to the British Heart Foundation’s latest statistics, it is clear that cardiovascular disease remains the UK’s biggest killer. They believe that heart disease prevention – through positive lifestyle messages – must become a major focus if reduction is to be successfully continued.

The heart health assessment service at The Cardiac Centre, within Spire Bushey Hospital, will provide people with a consultation, lasting around one and a half hours. Tests to detect any abnormalities that may occur will be carried out in the consultation, and patients will receive advice on how to avoid coronary disease.

Karen Sabourin, cardiac nurse at Spire Bushey Hospital explains the benefits of the service: “If you sometimes feel out of breath, have any kind of discomfort in your chest or simply feel that your diet or lack of exercise is affecting your well being, then this service could offer you some insight and information on improving your health through realistic lifestyle changes. Many people have a family history of heart disease and it is important for them to receive testing and updated information to help reduce the risk of developing heart problems.”

The assessment includes medical, nutritional and emotional aspects. It is designed to address the needs of the individual and to challenge misconceptions surrounding exercise and leading a healthy lifestyle.

The assessment comprises:

• physical examination and consultation with cardiac nurse.
• review of your medical history.
• blood tests to include cholesterol (lipids) and blood sugar.
• assessment of cardiac risk factors, leading to prediction of developing heart disease.
• an electrocardiogram to record the electrical activity of the heart and to determine any abnormalities.
• information on heart disease, nutrition to help protect the heart and any relevant medication information required.
• personalised health report, including test results, to take away with you on the day.
• individualised action plan with practical advice to help minimise risks of developing heart disease.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) will be reported on by a consultant cardiologist. A full copy of the results of the assessment will be sent to your GP for his own records.

If this assessment should highlight any problems, further advice will be given or a referral will be made to the relevant health care professional for further investigation or treatment.
