Background Information
Professional profile:

Tony Dixon is a highly regarded and accomplished specialist colorectal surgeon who trained in Nottingham, Leicester and Bristol. Specialist colorectal and advanced laparoscopic training was undertaken during a fellowship in Brisbane, Australia in 1993. He is Reader in Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Surgery, University of Bristol and Director of the Laparoscopic Colorectal training Unit at North Bristol and Bristol Laparoscopic Associates.

Tony’s special interest and talent lies in using laparoscopic or minimal access techniques to treat colorectal cancer, complicated diverticulosis and inflammatory bowel disease. He is one of only a few surgeons in the country offering laparoscopic rectal cancer (TME) surgery, ileo-anal pouch surgery to patients with Ulcerative colitis and FAP and revisional surgery for Crohn’s disease. Having started using the technique in 1994, Tony is one of the UK’s most experienced laparoscopic surgeons and has performed over 2,500 laparoscopic bowel operations. His abilities, particularly in the performance of single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) are internationally recognised.

Spire Bristol Hospital, working with Tony and his anaesthetist, Dr Gareth Greenslade have achieved some of the best outcome measures for laparoscopic bowel resection. Our enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) results is amongst the best in the world.

Tony is also recognised for having developed and prospectively evaluated new innovative approaches to allow successful management of complex pelvic floor problems (STARR, Laparoscopic Ventral Mesh Rectopexy, high dose Botox and pudendal nerve release). He co-wrote a highly acclaimed textbook on the subject, runs yearly master classes and preceptors consultants around the UK and Europe in these techniques. A large part of his NHS and private practice, here at SPIRE is in treating national and international (includes the USA, Europe and Middle east) tertiary and quaternary referrals with pelvic floor problems. Often following unsuccessful operations performed elsewhere! He is the inaugural chair of the UK Pelvic Floor Society.

Tony also has one of the UK’s largest experiences of TEP laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (includes re-do operations referred from around the country) and the more challenging laparoscopic incisional hernia repair.

His work is regularly audited, presented at National and International meetings and published in peer review journals. Tony believes in using the knowledge he has gained from clinical research to benefit the patients he treats and takes pleasure in being able to offer his patients the latest and most effective treatments for their problems. His outcomes for cancer surgery performed here at Spire Bristol Hospital are amongst the best in the world.

Mr Dixon is also actively involved in postgraduate (consultant) medical education and clinical skills training. His innovative work at National and International level was recently recognised when the University of Bristol awarded him the post of Reader in Colorectal & Pelvic Floor Surgery and the Royal College of Surgeons England awarded him an honoury fellowship. Tony is one of the leading trainers of consultant surgeons in the national training programs for laparoscopic colorectal (Lorec) and low rectal cancer (LOREC) surgery run by the Department of Health. One of his most important roles is to make an assessment of a consultant’s competency to perform safe independent laparoscopic surgery; competency is only achieved by 30% of enrolled consultants!

For the last 10 years Tony has offered a highly sought advanced laparoscopic-pelvic floor fellowship working at both NBT and here at Spire Bristol Hospital, which in recent years has been filled by international surgeons of consultant status. His web site has over 1200 hits/day.

Personal profile:
When away from work, Tony's interests include farming, gardening, music, fine dining and foreign travel. He is married to Colette, a local GP here in Bristol, and has two sons.
