Following undergraduate medical training in London I moved to Oxford where I spent nearly 10 years completing my general medical and then higher specialist endocrinology training in a centre of excellence. Whilst in Oxford I was awarded an MRC Clinical Training Fellowship to fund my research PhD into the molecular genetics of various endocrine tumours and I successfully completed my D.Phil. in 2006. I was appointed as a consultant endocrinologist at Bristol Royal Infirmary in 2007 and I am lead clinician for the endocrine service.
As well as having strong sub-specialist interests in antenatal endocrinology, pituitary, adrenal, thyroid and parathyroid disease I have also established and lead the Bristol neuroendocrine and endocrine late effects of cancer services. I have sustained my academic interests and have secured grant income to work on adrenal disease and endocrinology in critical illness as well as supporting industry research.
On a national level I have a broad portfolio of abstracts, posters and publications and am a member of the editorial board of the journal Clinical Endocrinology. I am also the Media Liaison Representative for the Society for Endocrinology's Public Engagement Committee where my remit is to advise on all matters pertaining to the promotion of endocrinology to the media and public.
Within my NHS endocrine service I have sought both patient and colleague feedback. Patient Feedback: 98% of my patients rated the quality of my consultant led service as excellent (77%) or good (21%). They were asked to score multiple domains of clinical knowledge, communication skills, respect & kindness from 1 (most positive response) to 4 (most negative response). My average score was 1.2. Additional written comments included: excellent service; exceptionally kind; meticulous approach; treated with respect; the only clinic I have been happy to attend. Colleague Feedback: I completed a multidisciplinary exercise in which domains focusing on knowledge, performance, quality, communication, teamwork & maintaining trust were scored from 1 (not effectively) through to 6 (extremely effectively). My scores ranged from 5.6-5.8. Additional written comments included: excellent communicator/team worker; exceptional colleague; clear decision maker; yet to meet colleague/patient who does not praise her commitment and communication skills; honest & compassionate; calm and good humoured.
