Liver disease is an increasing problem in the UK. Many patients with liver disease are unaware that they have it, as in its early stages there are very few, if any, symptoms.
Small changes in lifestyle can help you prevent significant liver disease
You may be at risk of liver disease if:
- You are overweight
- Suffer from high blood pressure
- Have diabetes
- Consume a higher than recommended alcohol consumption
- Have been exposed to certain viruses that can cause liver disease
Patients with advanced liver disease can become extremely unwell. However, if identified early enough, even small changes in lifestyle could help prevent significant liver disease.
The Liver Health Clinic offers you the opportunity to see a liver specialist on a one to one basis. The clinic is held once a week in the evening to allow minimal disruption to professional working life. We aim to see patients within one week of referral and provide a complete assessment of your liver, arrange appropriate investigations such as an ultrasound and blood tests, and offer advice and treatment if needed.
What is involved?
Your Consultant Hepatologist, Dr Jim Portal, will carry out a full assessment including a full history, clinical examination and assessment of your risk of having liver disease. This will include a frank discussion regarding alcohol consumption, weight and other factors for liver disease. Liver blood tests will be performed and, if necessary, a liver ultrasound scan will also be arranged at your convenience.
If further tests are required, these will be arranged. These might include an endoscopy or liver biopsy.
Dr Jim Portal will then review all the results and discuss with you ways in which you might improve your liver health.
The Liver Health Clinic is held every Wednesday between 6pm and 8pm, and prices start from £200. If you have private medical insurance, this may be covered under your insurance policy so please contact your insurer for more details.
