    Background Information
    Professional profile:
Mr Wakefield is a consultant general and colorectal surgeon with an NHS practice at the North Bristol NHS Trust. Following basic medical and surgical training in London he has undergone higher surgical training in Oxford and Sheffield prior to his current appointment.

He has many published papers and abstracts in coloproctology and gained his medical doctorate from research into the link between inflammatory bowel disease and blood coagulation. Research interests continue into ways to improve the outcome for patients with colorectal diseases.

He is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, the Association of Coloproctology and several additional professional organisations.

His specialised training has provided an expertise in the investigation, diagnosis ad surgical treatment of all diseases which affect the colon, rectum and anus. Particular interests include: inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), colorectal cancer, colonoscopy (fibreoptic examination of the colon and rectum), incontinence disorders including rectal prolapse, management of common anal conditions such as haemorrhoids, fissures and fistulas.
    Personal profile:
Mr Wakefield has followed several generations of his family into medicine but is the first family member to become a Consultant Surgeon. He entered St Mary's Medical School, London in 1982 as a mature student following the successful completion of an honours degree in chemistry at the University of Surrey.

Mr Wakefield is married and has twin daughters and three cats. His wife, Wendy, manages his private practice. In the limited time left after meeting professional commitments, Mr Wakefield enjoys family activities which include swimming, cycling, walking, picnics and gardening. He has a keen interest in sport although is no longer an active participant. His personal ambition to to design an attractive but productive garden, to own some chickens and an Irish Wolfhound - whether these (and the cats) are compatible remains to be seen!
