New treatment for haemorrhoids offered by Mr Sylvester:
HALO
HALO (Haemorrhoid Artery Ligation Operation) is a new procedure for the treatment of haemorrhoids (bleeding and prolapse). This procedure is particularly effective for patients who have tried banding in the first instance and treatment has been unsuccessful.
HALO is a relatively short and quick procedure and allows the patient to be discharged on the same day. The procedure usually involves a general anaesthetic but does not surgically remove the haemorrhoids, unlike conventional treatments such as a haemorrhoidectomy. The procedure is relatively pain free compared to surgical removal.
HALO involves using a Doppler ultrasound device to locate the arteries supplying the haemorrhoids and allows the surgeon to place a stitch around the artery, cutting off the blood supply.
The procedure has a high success rate as the haemorrhoids eventually shrink away and symptoms resolve. Most patients are back to work within 72 hours after the procedure reporting little discomfort or pain.
