Mike Potts has been a consultant at Bristol Eye Hospital (BEH) for 22 years. Previously he trained at BEH and Moorfields Eye Hospital, London where he did a fellowship in orbital lacrimal and oculoplastic ophthalmic surgery before returning to take up his consultant position at BEH. His practice is split between general ophthalmology, cataract surgery and orbit and oculoplastic surgery.
He also specialises in neruo-opthalmology with a clinic at Frenchay Hospital specialising in neuro-opthalmology for the past 22 years.

His private rooms are at 2 Clifton Park on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings and Monday mornings at Spire Bristol Hospital .

Personal profile:

I have been in Bristol since 1970, and I completed my initial degree in physics.  Following the initial degree, a PhD in visual psychophysics in the Medical School awakened my interest in ophthalmology and the application of lasers and physics in eye surgery.  In 1976 I started a five year medical degree at Bristol Medical School qualifying in 1981.  After initial jobs in Bristol, including Frenchay Neurosurgery, I undertook an ophthalmic residency at Bristol Eye Hospital from 1982-86 and then spent six years at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London including Senior Registrar training and subspeciality training in orbits and oculoplastics.  I returned in 1991 as a Consultant Eye Surgeon at Bristol Eye Hospital, where for the past 20 years I have delivered the southwest regional orbital service, and pioneered treatments of medical immunosuppression in active Thyroid Eye Disease, resulting in a national trial (CIRTED).  I am also the neurophthalmologist to neurosurgeons/neurologists at Frenchay Hospital with a weekly clinic for the past 20 years.
