Shane Clarke qualified from St.Mary's Hospital in London in 1991. He has since acquired a thorough training in rheumatology and osteoporosis working in London, Sydney, the National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (Bath) and Bristol. He completed his medical doctorate (MD) on the use of DXA for osteoarthritis and was awarded a prestigious ARC Medical Education Fellowship to study shoulder and knee pain.
He was appointed consultant in rheumatology at Weston Area Health Trust in 2003. There he developed direct access services for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and a brand new diagnostic and management service for patients with osteoporosis. Both initiatives have been very popular with patients. In 2007 he co-authored the ARMA National Guidelines: Management of Regional Musculoskeletal Pain in spare time and served nationally on the ARC Education Sub-committee and ERAN Research and Education Committee. He was appointed Assistant Dean at the Trust and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol.
In 2009, Dr Clarke moved to University Hospitals of Bristol to take over the osteoporosis service. Referrals to the service have increased substantially. Dr Clarke was invited to form part of an inspection team assessing hip fracture and osteoporosis services in the South West as part of a Department of Health Initiative. In 2010 Dr Clarke co-ordinated the production of a set of regional osteoporosis guidelines that have been adopted by local commissioning (PCT) bodies regionally. He is medical advisor to the National Osteoporosis Society Groups in both Weston-super-Mare and Bristol.
To date he has written over 40 scientific articles including a review article on Osteoporosis guidelines for a national GP publication and a chapter on osteoarthritis for the University of Bath Diploma Course. He is a referee to the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases and Age & Aging.
A qualified biologist, Shane Clarke is very much at home exploring rock pools in his native South Devon. Also a keen gardener he divides spare time between his family, renovating an old Victorian pile, and 5-a-side soccer on a Wednesday night. Ambitions are to spend more time walking in the country with his family and finishing the chicken run.
