Dr Cottrell is the local principal investigator for several international multi-centre clinical trials in Multiple Sclerosis.  He also runs his own neurophysiological study in Primary Progressive MS based at Frenchay Hospital.

My private interest is in general neurology and in particular headaches. I attend the American Academy Neurology meeting on an annual basis to keep updated. I also provide a medical legal service in neurology.
At Frenchay hospital I run both general neurology and multiple sclerosis clinics. I have established the new rapid access MS relapse clinic for patients with MS and secured funding for an additional MS nurse and secretary and have received both ethical approval and financial backing to commence a neurophysiological study in primary progressive MS.
I have regular teaching commitments to both the 3rd and 5th year medical students.

I have also been instrumental in starting a MS charity, BrAMS (Bristol and Avon Multiple Scelrosis) to provide a specialist MS centre at Frenchay to improve patient care and increase clinical trial activity in MS at Frenchay.

I qualified with an MB ChB and BSc (Hons) first class from Edinburgh University. I later received a PhD in mitochondrial cytopathies, ageing and Alzheimer’s disease from Newcastle University. I have published work, which was carried out at the Universities of Yale and Western Ontario and published widely in the fields of Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Ageing and Mitochondrial disorders.

I moved with my family to Bristol in 2005 to take up a Consultant and Senior Lecturer post with a lead role in the delivery of care for patients with multiple sclerosis. I run general neurology and multiple sclerosis clinics including the new relapse clinic at Frenchay Hospital.

I continue to be active in clinical research and is part of the Stem Cell research team based at Frenchay.
