Rise in 60s and 70s cosmetic surgery

More people than ever in their 60s and 70s are having cosmetic surgery.

Spire Bristol Hospital is supporting the hospital group’s national statistics, recently released, which show that over a five-year period there has been a staggering 303% growth in women and 168% growth amongst men in their 60s having cosmetic surgery procedures. The hospital itself has witnessed a 275% increase in cosmetic surgery over a five-year period, with its most popular procedure being breast augmentation, showing the growing popularity amongst people in the Bristol area.

Furthermore, nationally there has been a 175% increase in men in their 70s and 133% increase in women of the same age group. However, the sharp rise in ‘60+ surgery’ indicates that more people – including men - are pursuing surgery as an option to combat ageing.

Mr Simon Lee, Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Spire Bristol Hospital comments:

“There is an increasing amount of people having cosmetic surgery during the last five years, so it has never been more important to make sure that the surgeon has the correct qualifications. Nationally, there has been a rise in male cosmetic procedures over a five-year period, as well as older people in their 60s and 70s recognising the increasing acceptance of cosmetic surgery. As well as fully-qualified consultants, people should make sure that their cosmetic surgery takes place in a clean, safe facility, with good access to aftercare. There are an increasing number of ‘cowboy’ practices setting up, and with the credit crunch affecting people financially, they may be tempted to save money. However, this is still surgery and the same care and aftercare should be available, regardless of the procedure.”

Other national highlights include:

  •  Men in their 40s having cosmetic surgery has risen by 69% over five years, and for women in their 40s by 94%
  • 18-19 year-old women have seen an increase of 116% in cosmetic procedures over a five year period
  • Top five procedures are: breast augmentation, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction, breast reduction and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
  • Top five procedures for men are: pinnaplasty (ears pinned back), rhinoplasty (nose job), liposuction, gynaecomastia (male breast reduction) and blepharoplasty (eye lid surgery)
  • Nose reshaping surgery has risen by 9% in the past year.
