DVT Risk Assessment For All Patients in Surgery

Spire Bristol Hospital routinely undertake a thorough a risk assessment for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or bleeding on all our patients before they undergo surgery.

Following this risk assessment, our nurses administer blood thinning medication, and compression stockings to reduce the risk of a patient contracting the condition in accordance with NICE guidelines.

A DVT is a condition in which a blood clot forms in one of the deep veins, usually the leg. It can cause severe pain and swelling and can potentially lead to complications such as a pulmonary embolism.

Every quarter, we carry out a documentation record audit to assess the quality of our nurses’ record keeping, and our latest figures show that when it comes to DVT risk assessment, staff are complying with both the NICE standard and with Care Quality Commission guidelines, 100 per cent of the time.
