Dr Amit Bahl MBBS, MD,DNB, FRCP, FRCR, FFRRCSI

Background Information 

Amit Bahl is Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Clinical Director at Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre with a special interest in breast and urological cancers. He has led and developed the prostate brachytherapy service at Bristol.  He has been an expert adviser to NICE for the technology appraisal on new drugs and an external service reviewer. He has been awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians. He is a current member of the National Cancer Research Institute for prostate and bladder cancer, and has supervised several research projects. He has previously been in the NCRI Renal clinical studies group. He is an Executive Committee member of the British Uro-oncology group. Dr Bahl is actively involved in research into breast, prostate and bladder cancers, participates in clinical trials and regularly publishes articles and has several presentations at national and international meetings. In 2012, Dr Bahl was awarded the Cochrane Shanks Jalil Professorship by the Royal College of Radiologists, London.

Dr Mark Beresford

Background Information 

Dr Beresford is chair of the network breast cancer site-specific group and regional lead for breast cancer trials. He is the founder and chair of the UK Breast Cancer Group which acts as a voice for breast cancer oncologists across the country, and is an executive committee member of the British Uro-oncology Group. Other national roles include being an elected member of the breast and radiotherapy subgroups of the National Cancer Research Institute and an advisor on the Cancer Research UK population studies group.

Dr Hoda Al Booz MBBCh (Honours), M.MedSci, MD, FFRRCSI, FRCR


Background Information 

Dr Al Booz is Consultant Clinical Oncologist, specialises in chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment for Gynaecological cancers and for cancers of the Head and Neck. She has expertise and special interest in using specialised radiotherapy techniques such as Brachytherapy and IMRT. This experience was built over years of specialist training in Leeds and Bristol. In Leeds she completed a Master degree in medical Science of Oncology and an MD research on Prostate Brachytherapy. In Bristol she lead a research about normal organs that are at risk of being damaged by internal radiotherapy (Brachytherapy), as part of her interest in the radiobiology of high dose radiation used in Brachytherapy. Dr Al Booz keeps a regular attendance to national and international Medical and radiation oncology scientific meetings and conferences. She works closely with the Wales and South west Head and Neck Oncologists and the South West Gynaecology Oncologists. Both groups meet biannually to share and discuss clinical protocols, trials and peer review their practices. She is a core member of both multidisciplinary Head and Neck and Gynae-oncology teams in Bristol, both her private and NHS patients benefit from the speedy referral to surgeons when needed. She is a Clinical Teacher in the School of Clinical Sciences in the University of Bristol, and lectures at the University of West of England to both under and post graduate students. She obtained the Radiation Oncology Fellowship of both the Royal College of Radiologist in London and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Dr Al Booz has set up the Bristol Gynae oncology course, which is the first in the UK to handle Gynae oncology from diagnosis to all modalities of treatment thoroughly. The course is being accredited by the Royal College of General Practitioners, and aims to speed the early diagnosis and management of Gynaecological cancers. The course is a success for the third year and excellent feedback from candidates is constantly received.

Background Information 

My major clinical interests are thoracic (lung) and gastro-intestinal malignancies (oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, colo-rectal).  I provide specialist chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments often in combination with surgical Interest in lung cancer and clinical research was stimulated as a MRC Clinical Scientist in Cambridge where the MRC cancer trials unit was situated at the time.  A MD related to lung cancer and scheduling of topoisomerase poisons with and without radiation is the basis of on-going interest in chemo-radiotherapy and new drugs.  I have a major interest in research and where possible all patients who are referred will be offered an appropriate clinical trial.

Dr Penny Kehagioglou MBBS(Honours), MRCP,FRCReq, MPH

 

Background Information 

I graduated from the University of Wales with Honours and I trained in General Medicine and subsequently Clinical Oncology in UK and Greece. During my Oncology training, I obtained an MSc in Public Health/Health Services Management. In my first consultant post in Scotland, I specialised in Lower GI, Breast and Gynaecological malignancies, with special interests in HDR Gynae Brachytherapy, but I was also involved in Medical Education (Honorary Senior Lecturer Dundee University), clinical trials and worked as Vice Chair at the East of Scotland Research Ethics Committee. I joined the RUH in July 2013 where I currently specialise in Gynaecological, Urological and Brain malignancies. My special clinical interests include Modern Radiotherapy Techniques (IMRT, IGRT), Prostate Brachytherapy and Late Effects of Pelvic Radiotherapy. I am actively involved in Medical Education (Honorary Senior Lecturer Bristol University) and I am the Clinical Governance Lead for Oncology/Hematology at the RUH.

Dr Chris Herbert BSc, MBChB, MRCP, FRCR

 

Background Information 

Dr Chris Herbert qualified in medicine at Birmingham University in 2000. He trained in Clinical Oncology in Bristol and completed his oncology training as a clinical research fellow at the British Columbia Cancer Agency in Vancouver, Canada, where he specialised in stereotactic radiosurgery and the treatment of benign and malignant adult brain tumours. Appointed as consultant Clinical Oncologist in Bristol in 2011, he has an interest in technical radiotherapy, specialising in the treatment of adult brain tumours, including stereotactic radiosurgery, and skin tumours, in particular malignant melanoma. He has published work on stereotactic radiosurgery and external beam radiotherapy in international, peer reviewed journals.

Dr Amarnath Challapalli MBBS, MD(Radiotherapy), MRCP-UK, FRCR, Ph.D

 

Background Information 
Dr. Amarnath Challapalli is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in the treatment of urological cancers with radiotherapy, brachytherapy and chemotherapy. He also specialises in the treatment of non-melanomatous skin cancer with radiotherapy. He previously worked as a Locum Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden Hospital, and was appointed to a substantive post in University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust in February 2014.

Dr. Challapalli undertook his medical training at Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad, India and specialised in clinical oncology (M.D. Radiotherapy) at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. He worked in the UK, since 2004 as a Clinical Fellow in Bristol, Christie Hospital, Manchester and at the Hammersmith Hospital, London, during which he completed his MRCP and FRCR examinations, and obtained the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CESR) in 2011.

He subsequently completed PhD at Imperial College, London in January 2014. His research focused on the translation of novel PET tracers looking at cell proliferation, apoptosis and choline metabolism into clinical studies to look at early response assessment to treatment.
