About radiotherapy treatment

External Beam Radiotherapy is delivered by the Therapy Radiographers; they will carefully position you using the skin marks that are put on at the planning appointment. Once you are in the correct position the machine will deliver the high energy X-rays. It can move around you to different angles and positions to deliver the specific radiotherapy treatment designed for you. Treatment is painless, the radiographers will leave the room whilst the radiotherapy is delivered but you are watched on a camera at all times. You will not be radioactive following radiotherapy treatment and you are at no risk to children and pregnant women.

The Spire Specialist Care Centre use the latest advances in technology in order to provide the most accurate radiotherapy treatment tailored to your specific needs. It uses Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) to shape the radiotherapy beam precisely to the area requiring treatment whilst minimising the dose to surrounding normal tissue. Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT) will be used alongside these techniques to take scans before and sometimes during the radiotherapy. This is to ensure positional accuracy of the radiotherapy treatment.

Before you start your course of radiotherapy you will need to attend a planning appointment.
